Why We’re Moving Riven Kingdoms Out of Kindle Unlimited

Hi everyone,

I sent this Q&A in my newsletter a few weeks ago, but I’ve been getting a lot of questions, so I wanted to post it here on the blog as well.

Before we get started, I want to let you know you can still read the entire Riven Kingdoms series with Kindle Unlimited if you download the box set. It will be available in Kindle Unlimited until May 24th.

If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Wishing you the best,

Shari :)

Why are you removing The Riven Kingdoms from Kindle Unlimited?

First off, I think Kindle Unlimited is great. I have a subscription myself, and I enjoy it, so it’s not because I’m unhappy with the program. However, when an ebook is in Kindle Unlimited, it cannot be listed anywhere else. Jake and I have talked a lot about this, and we’ve finally decided we want to start offering some of my backlist to a wider audience. I especially want to offer my books to libraries. I’ll go into detail on that in a minute.

Are you taking out any other books?

Yes. My Fairy Tale Kingdoms books have already left Kindle Unlimited, and they’re available on all the major retailers, including the library sites. We’re also planning to take Crown and Crest wide as well. It might take a while. It’s a pretty involved process that requires a lot of admin work. Just like I did with The Riven Kingdoms, I’ll give you warning, so you can grab the books with your Kindle Unlimited subscription before they leave the program. (Make sure you subscribe to my newsletter for updates.)

What about your new releases? Will you still enroll them in Kindle Unlimited?

Unless something drastically changes at Amazon, we will be enrolling all my new series in Kindle Unlimited.

How can I read your books through my library? I don’t see them listed on Overdrive.

If your library uses Hoopla, you’ll see them as soon as we get them listed. (After Hoopla approves them, that is. It can be a lengthy process.) If your library uses Overdrive, you can usually make a library purchase request. They may or may not choose to buy them. That’s up to them. Right now, all the Fairy Tale Kingdoms books are available on both, along with some of my audiobooks. (Side note: since almost all of my audiobooks have been produced by publishers, I don’t have any say in where they go. That’s a bummer, and I’ve been putting more thought into that since we started this process.)

Do you plan to offer your backlist books through your own website?

Yes…eventually. Now that we’re back in Colorado, I feel like I have a little more room on my plate for this. But it probably won’t happen right away.
